As a founder, your vision is your engine. But it can also be a trap. The temptation to build features that excite you or solve your problems is immense. This is the single biggest reason why many startups fail: they build something nobody needs. To avoid this, you need a North Star—a constant reminder of who you are building for.

This is the role of personas and archetypes. They are your defense against feature creep and personal bias, ensuring you stay relentlessly focused on the very specific early adopters who will become your first champions.

What are personas and archetypes

A Persona (or a slightly broader Archetype) is a detailed, semi-fictional character profile that represents a key segment of your target audience. While fictional in name, it is built entirely on real data and research gathered from actual people.

It’s not a vague description like “millennials who like tech”; it’s a concrete representation of a group of users with shared goals, motivations, and frustrations. Think of it as the biography of your ideal first customer. It transforms the abstract concept of “the user” into a tangible person your whole team can get to know, empathize with, and design for.

While a persona describes a specific single person, an archetype describes this group of people from a slightly broader sense and has a broader more stylistic name!
